Lewis & Clark celebrates its 139th commencement

Lewis & Clark conferred 442 bachelor’s degrees during its 139th commencement ceremony, held at Pamplin Sports Center May 9. New York Times correspondent and author Timothy Egan delivered the commencement address and Aukeem Ballard ’11 served as the student speaker. Honorary degrees were bestowed on Egan and Board of Trustees member Ronald K. Ragen, who recently finished a three-year term as chair.
In his address, President Barry Glassner noted that the process of inquiry, discovery, and refinement of ideas has prepared graduating seniors for the “real world” and that the liberal arts experience gives them a distinct advantage in a challenging world.
“Your liberal arts education has made you the innovative thinkers and creative problem solvers that our knowledge economy demands, that employers value, and that make the best kinds of business and social entrepreneurs,” Glassner said. “And you have earned your degrees through experiences and in an environment that make you highly literate global citizens, people who think and act as part of the world rather than apart from the world.”
Psychology, biology, sociology/anthropology, and international affairs were all popular majors, and Lewis & Clark graduated its largest class to date in environmental studies.
